PAIAM Members gathered in good numbers at Sotheby’s, London, for the 7th Annual PAIAM Conference on 24 October 2018. They were invited to join an informative panel discussion entitled ‘Exploring the Future of Artificial Intelligence in the Art Market’. Anders Petterson, ArtTactic and PAIAM Board member was joined by Stephen Hennigan from the joint office of DCMS and BEIS for Artificial Intelligence; Jonathan Kewley, Partner and Co-Head of Clifford Chance Tech Group, specialist in fintech, blockchain and artificial intelligence regulation and Professor Mick Grierson, University of the Arts. Together they offered a brief introduction to AI and considered how it may evolve as an artistic practice and what the legal and regulatory implications of this might be. The emphasis of the debate was on knowledge-sharing and collaboration between the different sectors that the speakers and the PAIAM Membership represent.
The second part of the conference was dedicated to a presentation by Jeff Oppenheim on his new documentary entitled: Real Fake: The Art, Life and Crimes of Elmyr de Hory. Elmyr de Hory was one of the most notorious forgers, alleged to have painted thousands of “fakes.” Having eluded prosecution from Interpol, Scotland Yard and other authorities, Elmyr is the subject of a new investigation in a documentary by veteran filmmaker Jeff. Weaving excerpts from his film, featuring interviews with a cadre of international art experts, and offering a rare glimpse of the never before published legal papers of one of Elmyr’s greatest swindles, Jeff led a discussion regarding key issues of provenance, connoisseurship and forensics within the world of fakes, forgeries and the art world at large.
The afternoon started with a short AGM at which four new members were elected to the Board. They were: Cecilia Fletcher, Sotheby’s Compliance Counsel, Europe, Freya Simms, CEO of LAPADA and co-founder of Golden Squared Consulting, Fiona Graham, partner and private client, tax and trust lawyer at Boodle Hatfield and Gregor Kleinknecht partner in dispute resolution and business services at Hunters Solicitors.
PAIAM is grateful to Sotheby’s for kindly agreeing to host the event and to the guest speakers.
