PAIAM Members Evening at Tomasso Brothers Fine Art, London

PAIAM Members are invited to attend an evening at the Tomasso Brothers Fine Art Gallery in St James’s, London. Tomasso Brothers Fine Art was established in 1993 and opened its first London gallery in St James’s in 2013. Dino and Raffaello are recognised internationally for specialising in important European sculpture, with a particular knowledge of European Renaissance bronzes. They advise the Arts Council England and have promoted and supported major international institutions through loans and exhibitions, including the landmark show ‘Bronze’ at the Royal Academy of Arts, London. They have made significant sales to museums worldwide including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.
The evening will be held in the Gallery and members will be invited to view the sculptures and other works of art on display. There will be a talk on the gallery and its current display by one of the Tomasso Brothers team.

Tracing the history of London from prehistoric times through to the present day, the Museum of London takes in Roman sculpture, medieval treasures, original 17th-century costume, a full recreated Victorian high street and the 2012 Olympic cauldron.

The evening provided an opportunity for members of the new New York Chapter, to meet one another for the first time since PAIAM NY Inc was launched in October 2016.  Members were invited to join a guided tour of the upcoming Sotheby’s Photographs auction, including work from the 19th to 21st centuries by Edward Weston, Josef Sudek, Edward Steichen, Diane Arbus, Helmut Newton and others.  Members were welcomed by Sotheby’s new Head of Fine Art Division, Marc Porter and by Bill Charron of Pryor Cashman and member of the NY Board.

‘Managing the Artist’s Legacy’ – an invitation to PAIAM members to join workshop

This day-long workshop was designed to help artists, their family and advisors plan for a successful legacy.  Drawing from practical experience, recognised experts and leaders in the field of artist’s estate management presented strategies for preserving, promoting and enhancing an artist’s legacy. The workshop used practical, real life examples to demonstrate the value of careful planning and implementation.  The panel of speakers included several PAIAM members.  Pierre Valentin, who co-led the workshop with Dr Anna Dempster, Head of Academic Programmes at the Royal Academy, said: ‘The day was a great opportunity to showcase the range of skills and experience of PAIAM members in the field of artists’ estates.  With the continued support of the Royal Academy, we hope to continue to offer education and support to artists, family members and advisors’.

PAIAM members evening at the Barbican Conservatory

Members were invited to an evening at the Conservatory at the Barbican Centre to kick-start the festive season.  The spectacular Conservatory is a joy to discover, a hidden tropical oasis in the heart of the city which is home to exotic fish and over 2,000 species of tropical plants and trees.
The event included tours of this amazing space with a guide whose specialist knowledge was exceptional.  Members enjoyed fine food prepared by a live chef and listened to three of our newest members give elevator pitches.  There was also an Art Market Quiz which proved quite taxing.  Congratulations to the winning team: Gregor Kleinknecht, Tim Maxwell, Anders Petterson and Nicola Wallace.

The 2015 Christmas drinks were held at The Foundling Museum, Bloomsbury, on 25 November 2015. The Foundling Museum explores the history of the Foundling Hospital, the UK’s first children’s charity and first public art gallery, which continues today as the children’s charity Coram. The moving story of the Hospital and the children who grew up there is revealed through the artworks, objects and archival documents on display in the Museum.

PAIAM Event @ Tower of London – November 2013

PAIAM hosted yesterday a Christmas dinner for its members at the Tower of London.

PAIAM members were met by Yeoman Warders at the main entrance to the Tower and accompanied to the Jewel House, where the dinner took place. The evening also included tours of the Crown Jewels and ended with the Ceremony of the Keys.

PAIAM’s inaugural annual conference took place on 17th January 2012 when Sotheby’s played host to a capacity audience of PAIAM members in their New Bond St galleries. The afternoon conference was moderated by James Kelly, PAIAM board member. Annabel Fell-Clark, CEO of AXA ART London was the first to speak, taking as her subject the current challenges for art insurers. She was followed by a presentation and discussion on ‘buying, owning and selling art in the UK – the new landscape for the “non-dom” advisor’, by Emma Chamberlain, Barrister, Pump Court Tax Chambers and Wendy Philips, Head of Tax and Heritage, Sotheby’s. PAIAM’s chairman, Pierre Valentin, Partner at Withers LLP then gave a talk in which he discussed a raft of recent cases dealing with the issue of the use of introductory commissions in the art world. Finally, Sebastian Cwilich, COO of Art.sy, gave a fascinating insight into how the internet is rapidly changing the way collectors engage in and buy art, and explained how Art.sy is operating in this area. The presentations were followed by drinks reception.

Networking Event: Sir John Soane’s Museum

On 13th September a networking event was held at the Soane Museum, Lincoln’s Inn Fields. Around 80 members attended. Tim Knox, the Museum’s Director gave a short talk about the Museum and current development plans. Members, who had been grouped according to four colour codes, were then gently encouraged to go forth and meet new people from a different group. This proved to be an entertaining for all, with members rising to the challenge of breaking out of their normal comfort zones.

PAIAM Event: ‘The Art of Deception’

Ian Lawson, Detective Constable of Scotland Yard’s Art & Antiques Unit, was the key note speaker at the latest PAIAM event held at Phillips de Pury and Company on Thursday 9th June. The topic was ‘The Art of Deception’ which covered criminal cases involving fakes and forgeries in the UK art market featuring artists such as Tracey Emin, Banksy and Paul Gauguin. The members were able to network within this modern gallery space amongst an iconic selling exhibition entitled ‘Life in Photographs’ by Linda McCartney.

PAIAM’s Launch Party

Anthony Browne, Chairman of the British Art Market Federation, was the guest speaker at PAIAM?s launch party held at White Cube Gallery on 1st March. He endorsed the aims of the new association enthusiastically and hoped there might be opportunities to work together with BAMF in the future. Pierre Valentin, Chairman of PAIAM?s Board also spoke, thanking Anthony Browne, and welcoming the new Members. Over 80 guests, drawn from a wide variety of professions, attended.
