PAIAM Conference 2012

PAIAM's inaugural annual conference took place on 17th January 2012 when Sotheby’s played host to a capacity audience of PAIAM members in their New Bond St galleries. The afternoon conference was moderated by James Kelly, PAIAM board member. Annabel Fell-Clark, CEO of AXA ART London was the first to speak, taking as her subject the current challenges for art insurers. She was followed by a presentation and discussion on 'buying, owning and selling art in the UK – the new landscape for the “non-dom” advisor', by Emma Chamberlain, Barrister, Pump Court Tax Chambers and Wendy Philips, Head of Tax and Heritage, Sotheby’s. PAIAM's chairman, Pierre Valentin, Partner at Withers LLP then gave a talk in which he discussed a raft of recent cases dealing with the issue of the use of introductory commissions in the art world. Finally, Sebastian Cwilich, COO of Art.sy, gave a fascinating insight into how the internet is rapidly changing the way collectors engage in and buy art, and explained how Art.sy is operating in this area. The presentations were followed by drinks reception.

Networking Event: Sir John Soane’s Museum

On 13th September a networking event was held at the Soane Museum, Lincoln’s Inn Fields. Around 80 members attended. Tim Knox, the Museum’s Director gave a short talk about the Museum and current development plans. Members, who had been grouped according to four colour codes, were then gently encouraged to go forth and meet new people from a different group. This proved to be an entertaining for all, with members rising to the challenge of breaking out of their normal comfort zones.

PAIAM Event: ‘The Art of Deception’

Ian Lawson, Detective Constable of Scotland Yard's Art & Antiques Unit, was the key note speaker at the latest PAIAM event held at Phillips de Pury and Company on Thursday 9th June. The topic was 'The Art of Deception' which covered criminal cases involving fakes and forgeries in the UK art market featuring artists such as Tracey Emin, Banksy and Paul Gauguin. The members were able to network within this modern gallery space amongst an iconic selling exhibition entitled 'Life in Photographs' by Linda McCartney.

PAIAM’s Launch Party

Anthony Browne, Chairman of the British Art Market Federation, was the guest speaker at PAIAM?s launch party held at White Cube Gallery on 1st March. He endorsed the aims of the new association enthusiastically and hoped there might be opportunities to work together with BAMF in the future. Pierre Valentin, Chairman of PAIAM?s Board also spoke, thanking Anthony Browne, and welcoming the new Members. Over 80 guests, drawn from a wide variety of professions, attended.
