PAIAM Conference 2014

PAIAM's third annual conference took place on 16 January 2014, kindly hosted once again by Sotheby's. The conference was opened by Wendy Philips, PAIAM Board, followed by talks and discussions from our guest speakers. Gilead Cooper QC, Three Stone Buildings, updated members on a raft of recent art law cases.

He was followed by Susannah Pollen, leading advisor in 20th Century and Contemporary Art, in conversation with Antonia Kimbell, PAIAM Board. Susannah shared her views on the challenges of valuing art in the present market.

Later in the afternoon James Salzmann (Managing Director, West Coast) of Paddle 8, offered insights into the internet as a platform for selling art. Paddle 8 is a recently established online art business providing monthly themed auctions and benefit auctions in collaboration with not-for-profits. Richard Aronowitz, European Head of Restitution, Sotheby's, then gave an update on the area of restitution, throwing into the spotlight the recent discovery of the trove of Nazi-looted art in Munich.

The Panel Discussion this year was called The International Art Market: where are we headed? chaired by Anders Petterson, ArtTactic and PAIAM Board. The Panel brought together Susannah Pollen, James Kelly, Science Ltd and PAIAM Board, and Oliver Barker, Deputy Chairman, Sotheby's Europe, with contributions from the audience.

The 2014 Conference was closed by Pierre Valentin, PAIAM Chair, followed by some wonderful wine tasting hosted by Sotheby's Wine Department, introduced by Serena Sutcliffe MW, Board Director, Worldwide Head of Wine, Sotheby's.
