PAIAM Conference 2012

Summary

PAIAM's inaugural annual conference took place on 17th January 2012 when Sotheby’s played host to a capacity audience of PAIAM members in their New Bond St galleries.

The afternoon conference was moderated by James Kelly, PAIAM board member. Annabel Fell-Clark, CEO of AXA ART London was the first to speak, taking as her subject the current challenges for art insurers. She was followed by a presentation and discussion on 'buying, owning and selling art in the UK – the new landscape for the “non-dom” advisor', by Emma Chamberlain, Barrister, Pump Court Tax Chambers and Wendy Philips, Head of Tax and Heritage, Sotheby’s. PAIAM's chairman, Pierre Valentin, Partner at Withers LLP then gave a talk in which he discussed a raft of recent cases dealing with the issue of the use of introductory commissions in the art world. Finally, Sebastian Cwilich, COO of Art.sy, gave a fascinating insight into how the internet is rapidly changing the way collectors engage in and buy art, and explained how Art.sy is operating in this area.
