Business Consultant
Henry Lydiate has specialised in legal and business issues relating to the art world since being called to the English Bar in 1974.

From 1976 to date he has written a regular column for Art Monthly, and his collected articles are published as the Artlaw Archive by Artquest for which he also provides on-line advice to artists: www.artquest.org.uk.

Between 1976 and 1978 he conducted The Artlaw Research Project for Arts Council Great Britain investigating the legal needs of visual artists in the UK. This led to his founding and chairing Artlaw Services (the charitable national legal service for the visual arts funded by ACGB and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation) where he also established and led a team of pro bono art lawyers until 1983.

In 1984 he founded with others the Design and Artists Copyright Society, the UK’s leading artists’ rights and collecting society.

In 2003 he founded the London-based art business consultancy, The Henry Lydiate Partnership LLP, which has one other equity partner and nine associates. Clients are internationally located and include artists and their estates, art market consultants, agents and gallery dealers, auction houses, public facing museums and galleries, trusts and foundations, central and local governments, and non-governmental organisations.

His portfolio includes designing and delivering postgraduate international art business and legal modules for Sotheby’s Institute of Art London and Online, Southwestern University Law School Los Angeles, and the University of the Arts London where he is Visiting Professor in Art Law.
